thewrongkindofpc: Rent Boy and Sick Boy from Transpotting, laughing in the hiking scene (Trainspotting)
Maybe my toxic trait is that a part of me thinks that the internet peaked when I was seventeen or so. But there's something that blows me away about the fact that people still send their secrets in to that address, analogue, written in their handwriting. I love it. The twee, early two-thousands vibe where there are, like, decals of bicycles everywhere and getting really into recycling was cool, there's a part of me that was formed by that that never decided that that thing was cringe.

I'm watching this -- oh, because I have covid, right, forgot to share that part -- so I have covid, and I'm watching a '90s cop show starring Robert Carlyle, because I never got over Trainspotting. Also, the first episode's writing is credited to a Daniel Boyle, but wiki assures me he's not to be confused with Danny Boyle, so no Trainspotting connection there. Probably-predictably, the Ao3 tag is all full of Once Upon A Time stuff -- I'm v happy for Robert Carlyle that he got that gig, but it's not what I want to read. When looking for a clip to illustrate the show on youtube, though, I found a handful of vids for what appears to be the main canonical couple (the other character played by Shirley Henderson, who, of course, was also in Transpotting).

Anyway, it's lots of fun, and let's see if I can drag myself into the habit of posting here a little more often than just to post my yuletide letter. Anyone have any recs for other things to watch while I have covid? My taste in sick-movie fare is exclusively things I might have seen on PBS in 2003, if that's helpful.

edited to add: this is one of the less coherent things I've ever committed to the internet -- let's call it an illness-side-effect and let bygones be bygones, shall we? Ugh, I really do feel like hot garbage.
thewrongkindofpc: A young teen (number five from the umbrella academy) and the slogan "super old" (number five)
So I've mentioned a couple of times that I've been watching a lot of Umbrella Academy cast videos, and it has occurred to me that, instead of just spamming my housemate group chat with endless links and strings of ten exclamation points as reactions, I could put together a post here, and share my color commentary with the world. (you're welcome? I'm sorry???)

These lovely fellows are, of course, some of the stand-out stars of the press-tour junket. They're goofy and sweet and they play off of each other well, and I'm seeing a lot of their stuff get linked and .gifed (though less this interview? which is a DAMN SHAME).

This interview in particular has something a bit telling about it, in the line where the interviewer opens with "How was the role pitched to you," when David starts off his answer with, "well, I needed a job." Because, like, he's definitely not a complete unknown, but he's been sort of an under-the-radar, working actor up until now--in things, but mostly small-ish things where he wasn't the person who ended up promoting them, or walking away with a ton of name recognition. And he seems fairly comfortable in a lot of the promo interviews he does with Robert, but one of the things about Robert Sheehan is that he's one of those dudes who gives the impression of having been born onstage, so not only does he have more practice with this kind of interview, but he's also in his element

(ALSO: fragile china cup of a person, holy shit, thank u for this piece of character work, Robert.)
