So I've mentioned a couple of times that I've been watching a lot of Umbrella Academy cast videos, and it has occurred to me that, instead of just spamming my housemate group chat with endless links and strings of ten exclamation points as reactions, I could put together a post here, and share my color commentary with the world. (you're welcome? I'm sorry???)
These lovely fellows are, of course, some of the stand-out stars of the press-tour junket. They're goofy and sweet and they play off of each other well, and I'm seeing a lot of their stuff get linked and .gifed (though less this interview? which is a DAMN SHAME).
This interview in particular has something a bit telling about it, in the line where the interviewer opens with "How was the role pitched to you," when David starts off his answer with, "well, I needed a job." Because, like, he's definitely not a complete unknown, but he's been sort of an under-the-radar, working actor up until now--in things, but mostly small-ish things where he wasn't the person who ended up promoting them, or walking away with a ton of name recognition. And he seems fairly comfortable in a lot of the promo interviews he does with Robert, but one of the things about Robert Sheehan is that he's one of those dudes who gives the impression of having been born onstage, so not only does he have more practice with this kind of interview, but he's also in his element
(ALSO: fragile china cup of a person, holy shit, thank u for this piece of character work, Robert.)
In some of these interviews, like THIS ONE, which I can link but can't figure out how to embed, since it's hosted on facebook, you can see David getting to a point where he's sort of reached the end of his train of thought but doesn't know how to tie it off, so he turns towards Robert and Robert jumps in, which is part of my theory for why they work together so well in these things.
This is a pretty extreme contrast to when he's in interviews with other people, where he can be very quiet, maybe kind of shy?
This interview also feat. David Castañeda wearing pretty rad nail polish, and Tom Hopper and Emmy Raver-Lampman demonstrating my OTHER fave interview dynamic, which I will explore further later on -- they, too, have GREAT interview chemistry, and seem to get along really well!
(I want to note, that I 100% believe them when they say they all get along really well, and I don't think this sometimes quietness of David Castañeda's in interviews is evidence AGAINST his being bros with anyone, I am sure they are all just as tight as they say they are. Also worth noting is that he's pretty damn chatty in his Spanish interviews, which I didn't hold onto links to because I couldn't understand them, but I think just by the length of time he spends on each question we can say that it's not just that he's in these interviews alone, but also that he has plenty to say. It makes sense that he's comfortable in Spanish, since Wiki says that while he was born in LA, he lived in Mexico until he was, like 14, I think?)
I also get the sense of Robert Sheehan as one of those people who has a really big personality, who fills the space, and so has had to take the time to actively learn to leave room for other people in a conversation. You can kind of tell when it's that versus someone who isn't used to taking center stage, and shares the spotlight naturally, there's just this edge of self-consciousness to the occasional, "what were you saying, though?" that I find endlessly endearing. So I bet that helps.
Tom Hopper and Emmy Raver-Lampman, on the other hand, while they're obviously also performers, they seem to turn it off more fully when they're not working than Robert Sheehan does, when they're not working, so that when they appear offstage and out of character, they're more just a pair of truly beautiful and incredibly charming humans than they are the main attraction. Which is great, but maybe also means they don't have to course-correct in the same way.
Their bond, holy shit. Also, Emmy is such a NERD here, such a delightful theater geek, I am so very warmly disposed towards her! (Also note, her instagram is a GIFT, and offers such gems as David trying to teach Emmy and Aidan to floss X, the CUTEST VIDEO IN THE ENTIRE WORLD of Justin getting his hair and makeup done on-set X, and other cast interaction gems X, X, X, X plus plenty of personal stuff if you, like me, feel like being the type of intrusive jerk who trawls thru a celeb's social to try to discern if she might be queer X, X, X) ALSO, their cultural exchange of sayings, these two are SO CUTE, I am fairly neutral on him, but as I was saying to
sansets the other day when talking about Crooked Media Dan, there's just something about straight dudes having respectful, genuine, 100% platonic seeming friendships with women that just instantly makes them feel 10000% more likable.
APOCALYPSE PLANS:
The thing about THIS ONE which makes me feel a wild and overwhelming wave of tenderness is when the interviewer describes their apocalypse plans as rock 'n roll, and David shakes his head, goes, "It's just weed," and it's just so innocent, this fucking sunshine SoCal boy. David.
FOR FURTHER EVIDENCE OF EMMY AND TOM THINKING EACH OTHER IS GR8:
(I semi wonder if Robert is just kind of talking shit here, I feel this may be an example of talking to hear himself talk. ENDEARING IF TRU, THO. And his played-for-laughs-but-also-probably-partially-real discomfort is pretty relatable. And David is, like, emotionally astute enough to calibrate his compliment to sincere without trampling that emotional impulse) (ALSO, nice sequel to the previous clip at the end there)
(I just rly like the joke at the end of the dancing bit, I may have a bit of a thing about David Castañeda, if that was not already clear)
In which Robert Sheehan wears a jacket that I desperately want to own. Tom and Rob, weird combo. Starts to get off the ground around 4-ish minutes? Good-ish for character stuff, not the most scintillating viewing experience. (give me yr jacket, rob)
hello body language. Also, good character notes on Klaus, thx again rob.
This game is neither as cute nor as difficult as I think the producers envisioned it being, but Emmy's "that's me! That's my line!!" was adorable and 100000% worth price of admission. ALSO, smoldering eye contact with the camera for "I'm sorry, Gerard," holy shitttttttt. ALSO ALSO the Memorable Moments section is excellent, oh, who am I kidding, this is a fabulous video, good on you, MTV.
(okay, and actually, I come close to having an EMOTION about Tom when Emmy teases him about not liking him and he goes SO FLUSTERED, because sometimes that kind of joking can THROW YOU OFF, I feel that, Tom!!)
Okay, okay, actually, I think that one feels the most like an illustration of these two relationships, Emmy and Tom's and David and Rob's, of any of these videos -- they're both dynamics with a lot of give and take, and each with their own odd kind of balance, so well played, whoever scheduled these series of interviews! And now I'm going to stop because I told myself no one needed more than an hour and a half's worth of me typing up nonsense about this -- I'm cutting myself off, do you hear me?
