...about trying to reacclimatize myself to posting more here is that I keep feeling like I ought to have a fun pic to post, but since I don't have a good pic hosting place, it would have to be something already online, and then I would have to THEMATICALLY TIE IT IN TO THE POST, and then posting becomes a whole thing. Probably I should start posting project pics to Tumblr, so I can link them here. Or maybe I just need some new icons that reflect recent stuff I'm into, idk.

lots of boring-for-now but maybe eventually interesting work stuff going on (several potential new jobs in the works, don't look now but by next month I might be making enough to actually cover all my expenses on a regular basis instead of falling short for months and then pulling in a new freelance thing to make up the difference, why on earth did I decide to live like this) who can say? And my housemates are out of town for a few days, so their cat, who is very particular about her people and, despite basically trusting me, has mostly not warmed up to me in the three years we've been living with her, has wanted to hang out! So that has been lovely.

I need to get back into writing mode since Yuletide is fast approaching, but I keep finding myself just wanting to read more, and take more in. Who all is yuletiding this year? Are you all further along than me? I have a concept and a hazard series of notes in my notes app, but that is IT.

MEDIA I'VE BEEN INTO LATELY

Reservation Dogs is VERY GOOD -- I'm aware of the conversations around anti-blackness in the show, and I've been turning over what I think in my mind a lot because it's definitely not my lane to pass judgement or excuse anything, but I think there's a strong element of depiction vs endorsement missing from the conversations I've seen about non-Black characters using AAVE and cultural appropriation. I definitely see how it would cross a line depending on your point of view and media preferences -- whether you prefer your media to model behaviors vs depict existing ones, generally, though I do know that everything does both, to varying degrees. I think it's a really beautiful, thoughtful, funny show with a lot of heart to it, and I watched the entirety of season two in one night. If anyone else is watching, I'd love to talk about it.

(ETA: I also think it's pretty clear that the creators heard these concerns and took them on board in writing s2 -- the episode with the truck driver in particular is revisited in a way that felt satisfying to me, anyway.)

All of the kids are perfect, but right now I'm deep in my feelings about Willie Jack -- she's one of those characters who tries so hard to take care of people and not let it look like things are bothering her, and by the end of this season she's asking her friends, again and again, to notice that she's struggling and she misses them, but the only way she knows to reach out is to try to take care of them, so they keep missing what she's actually feeling, because she doesn't know how to say it, and my HEART. I read somewhere that her character was originally conceived of as male, before she was cast -- I can't find the quote, but it looked legit -- which I think is such an interesting insight into the way she doesn't seem to fit into most teen shows' gendering and romantic tropes in a way that means that I'm never just waiting for the next expected story beat, with her. We get that with Cheese, too, a bit, which is FABULOUS. The Cheese-centric eps are always A++++.

I'm reading the letters of Paul Cézanne, and reading people's letters is such a fascinating way to get to know them -- you get to see who they're guarded with, who they're playful with, who they write often, who they always apologize to for taking a while to reply. It's such an external way to know a person, all outward projections, but also so intimate. I want to write a long letter to the guy who translated this collection because it IS in translation, and a lot of the letters are excerpts, and others are letters to or about Cézanne as well as ones he wrote, and I just want to shake this guy and ask what story are you telling, here?? Are the letters he included to Cézanne from Zola the only ones Cézanne saved? Because if so, that would be pretty telling. If, on the other hand, they're the only ones included because they're the only ones the translator wanted to include for mysterious reasons of his own, that's also telling, but in a different way. Tell me your secrets, Alex Danchev. I got this book out of the library, but I'm getting the sneaking feeling I'm going to have to buy my own copy, especially if I get one of these new jobs. Fuck.

I'm also rereading Some Place To Be Flying, because it has the best name and because I realized when I was on the train west last winter that I really do still find Charles DeLint so soothing of a read, just the way he sees the world, and I still can't sleep for shit three and a half months after the tree-falling-on-my-mom's-house thing, so sometimes I want to be soothed.

And yes, I did break down and buy a couple of Torchwood Big Finish audio adventures! Gonna put some on and knit for a bit. Bye, all!

You can post pics on Discord and link here, if you are on discord? I think DW also has a very small amount of pic hosting on all accounts now. Or you can just post text! Fingers crossed for jobs! <3

I really should reread Some Place To Be Flying one of these years! It was my very first Charles DeLint, which is unfortunate in some ways because it's far and away my favorite of the DeLints I've read and it's always a bit awkward to go from your favorite to one that doesn't click quite as well for you, but on the other hand, is delightful because it's so very good. (And there are still a bunch of DeLints I haven't yet read, so it might well get superseded one of these days!)

I am very fond of dreamwidth and aspire to get back to a posting comfort level where I can just update with random thoughts a la twitter, but I do miss the ease of uploading images. Do I have to...make a cat instagram?
