dear yuletide writer,
Oct. 17th, 2021 11:41 amdear yuletide writer,
Thank you thank you thank you in advance for whatever fabulous thing you're about to create for whichever one of these fandoms I care so much about! I'm so sorry this letter is a few days late going up!
Blanket DNWs: I can't do brain damage/memory loss-centric stories (and I'm also not jazzed about brain damage jokes, tee bee haitch), and I'd prefer to avoid non-canonical main character death, if that's cool. Other than that, go wild.
Hey, so, before we go any further, prompts here are for if you want them (I know looking at what other people love about these super obscure stories is one of my favorite parts of yuletide), but please don't let yourself feel constrained by them, or get stressed about using all or any specific parts of what I'm saying here -- optional details are the most optional thing, we're all here to have a good time, you know the drill.
Gonna grab a general likes paragraph from a previous year's letter: General likes: missing scenes, close-to-canon AUs, more wild AUs that use canonical details in interesting ways, fic that explores how characters’ personalities formed, family stuff both found and otherwise, stories about the moment when someone starts to feel like they’ve really grown up, reconnection stories, established relationship stories and stories where the characters getting together isn’t where it ends, complicated-but-affectionate relationships, people in bands, domesticity.
I’m on Ao3 under the same name, if you want to poke around there, too!
If ship fic speaks to you, I’m so very down for that, but I also do adore gen, so if that’s not your jam, or if we don’t line up in our shipping preferences, totally
And on to our contestants!
The Casson Family
I am definitely picturing the character selection as either/or, here: Tom and Indigo or Eve and Linda, although if you feel like shuffling it up — Eve and Indigo, Linda and Indigo, or really any combination of these characters that strikes your fancy, but totally don’t feel any pressure to include all of this group of people!
W/r/t Indigo and Tom: I do ship it, but ALSO, if you do not, I would totally love to read your thoughts/feelings about their friendship — either how they stay in touch over the years, or how they reconnect later. Maybe the stories Francis hears, growing up, about her big brother’s English friend? Or Indy doing a year of study abroad with Tom’s family? Or Tom’s famous and famously-absent mother making a surprise visit at a time when Indigo and Tom are together. I’d love to see college fic, I’d love to see them staying in touch via music — basically, if you can imagine a way for them to interact, in that warm you-are-so-different-from-me-but-I-know-you way, I want to read it. The only thing I’m really not here for is a romantic relationship between Tom and Rose when they’re older.
If you go the other way, I’d love to hear a little more about Eve and Linda growing up, or Eve and Linda and Bill’s tangled romantic web before all the kids came along, the parts of it that were messy and hard, and maybe some of the parts that were beautiful.
Die
Hey WOW, so that final issue sure did happen, didn’t it?? The paragraph under the cut is going to include spoilers, but if you’re just following the trades, I’ll be delighted to read whatever you want to write that uses the canon up through vol. 3. Some basics: according to me, Ash and Sol are a little bit in love. Whether that’s something that can or should translate into a romantic relationship at any point is up to you, but I love all the layers of teenage intensity and investment in each other that just got frozen in time for all those years, and the way it just sort of rockets back into place for both of them the moment they reconnect. I’d love to hear more about Sol creating the world, and the ways it’s for and about Ash, and the ways it’s for and about himself.
( Die spoilers!!! )
MacGuffin & Co.: Protagonish
Jonny and Sasha said it best, that moment when they described their characters, caught each other’s eyes, and said, “Are we in love?”
“Eh, it’s more of a will-they, won’t they.”
I’d love something more about the thing Sasha was doing where, every time Harper thought Austin did something hot, Harper got a new layer of sexy grime over his clean-cut-ness. I’d love to see if Austin has an equivalent. Maybe they have to do something which requires going to dinner with Austin’s dad, ….SATAN. Maybe they meet a problem that even Harper’s really cool jacket can’t help bluff their way out of and they have a pre-famous-last-stand heartfelt moment.
All Creatures Great and Small (TV 1978)
Hey, so I do have this idea in my head — based on a lot of things! — that Tristan and James and Helen are all in love. Is that something that speaks to you at all? If not, Please feel free to disregard that thought and write some wacky gen hijinks, or something about James and Helen as the stable center of all that Farnon chaos, would be wonderful.
If you do have any interest in Helen/James/Tristan: one thing I really love is how close Helen and Tristan are in the show, and I do think that’s part of it. The bit where Tristan rescues the cat, and begs James to operate to save it, and then Helen adopts the cat was just a really good episode for me. But in general, I do love how Tristan is such a hurricane, and it does feel like he depends on both James and Helen’s steadiness, and the way they’re both so affectionately indulgent with him, even when he’s being an asshole.
One thought I’ve had in my head is the idea of more of a modern AU where instead of figuring out the angle with historical accuracy about attitudes around sex and sexuality, James Herriot takes a new job as a vet in a new town at a more recent point in history, moves to the Yorkshire Dales, and falls in love — twice. I love the idea of James and Helen the established couple realizing they have feelings for Tristan, but I’d also love to see all three of them collide with each other at once. Really, if any one single part of this rambling series of paragraphs speaks to you, I am going to be over the moon.
Anyway, thanks in advance, yuletide writer, I’m so excited to see what you come up with. Happy winter!!
